This guide takes you from signing in to reviewing your first accessibility issues. In the ility app, the sites you monitor are called Surfaces.

Before you begin

You need:
  • An ility account
  • The URL of a site you want to test, such as https://example.com
To add a site, you need to be a member or owner of your workspace. Viewers can see surfaces but can’t add them.
1

Go to app.ilitylabs.com and sign in.If this is your first time, ility asks you to create a workspace. A workspace holds the sites you monitor and the teammates you work with. Enter a Workspace name and select Create workspace.ility then asks What site do you want to audit? Enter your site’s URL and select Start my first scan. ility adds the site and starts finding its pages, so you can skip to the Run a full scan step. To add a site later instead, select Skip for now — take me to my sites.
2

Add your first site

In the sidebar, select Surfaces, then select Add surface. In an empty workspace, the button reads Add your first surface. On the Add surface page:
  1. In Base URL, enter the address of your site, such as https://example.com.
  2. Optional: in Name, enter a label your team will recognize, such as “Marketing Site”. ility shows the URL under it.
  3. Under How should we find pages?, choose how ility finds your pages:
    • Discover from the URL above follows links from your URL. It works on any site and is the recommended option.
    • Use sitemap.xml reads your sitemap from its standard path. It’s faster and more complete when your site has one.
  4. Select Add surface and start crawl. If you chose the sitemap, the button reads Add surface and crawl sitemap.
ility opens the new surface and starts the crawl, which finds the pages on your site. The surface header shows the progress, such as “Crawling… 24 pages found”. While the crawl runs, ility scans the first page it finds, so your first issues appear within about a minute.
To add the site without crawling it yet, select Just register the surface — I’ll start a crawl later.
3

Run a full scan

The first automatic scan only covers one page. To scan every page the crawl found, select Run scan in the surface header. The header shows the scan’s progress, such as “Scanning 12 of 140 pages”. You can pause, resume, or cancel the scan from the same place. If some pages haven’t been scanned yet, the Overview tab offers a button to scan only those, such as Scan 18 unscanned pages.
4

Review your results

Open the Overview tab of your surface. It starts with one sentence on how the site is doing and its score, followed by what to fix next, the scan history, and a breakdown of issues by WCAG criterion and severity. The score measures WCAG conformance only. It weighs each failing rule by its severity and by how many elements fail it. Best-practice issues are tracked separately and don’t affect the score.
5

Review issues

Open the Issues tab of your surface. Next to View issues by, choose how to group them:
  • Issues lists each issue with its severity, status, and the pages it affects.
  • Rules groups issues by the accessibility rule they break.
  • Pages lists your pages with the issues on each one.
Use the Severity filter to focus on Critical, Serious, Moderate, or Minor issues, and the Status filter to show Open, Resolved, Won’t fix, or False positive issues. Select an issue to see the details. To see issues across every surface in your workspace, select Issues in the sidebar.
